Many places from around the UK feature in television and film each year. We’ve chosen a selection of our favourite filming locations to explore, all of which are in easy reach of some of our Best of British holiday parks.
Closest BoB parks: Highlands End, East Fleet Farm, Wood Farm Caravan Park
West Bay is a small fishing village situated on Dorset’s beautiful Jurassic Coast. This quaint seaside resort featured heavily in the acclaimed ITV series, Broadchurch and has become an increasingly popular destination in the years since the show aired. As you walk around the harbour and along the promenade you will recognise many iconic landmarks from the show, including the striking golden cliffs, which flank East beach and the Jurassic Pier. Eagle eyed viewer’s will spot the blue hut on the banks of the River Brit, which served as Hardy’s waterside home and The Folly, which was used as Wessex Police Station. Fans of the series can even enjoy delicious food and drink in the Watch House Café, which also made a cameo appearance.

The star studded 2012 movie adaption of the renowned West End Musical, Les Miserables was filmed in part at Pulteney Weir, next to Bath’s Grand Parade. Errors in filming meant the final scene where Javert, played by Russel Crowe jumped from the bridge had to be re-shot, whilst the movie was in postproduction. The stunning Georgian architecture for which Bath is famed can be seen in the movie and visitors to the city can wander along Pulteney Bridge, which offers beautiful views along the River Avon. The bridge itself is one of the only bridges in the world to be lined with shops.

Downton Abbey was filmed at the spectacular Highclere Castle, home to the Earl and Countess of Carnavon. The much-loved period drama was broadcast across the globe, earning a special place in the hearts of millions. Today visitors flock to the castle each year to experience the grandeur of this extraordinary stately home. Tours are available at designated periods throughout the year and expert guides are posited throughout the house to offer stories and information as you explore the stately rooms of the ground floor at your leisure. The castle is set in over 1,000 acres of garden and parkland, ideal for a family picnic on a warm and sunny day!

Filmed at various locations throughout the county, Poldark shows the Cornish coastline in all its glory. Experience the rugged cliffs and sheltered coves that make up the backdrop of the hit BBC1 series, during a family break to Cornwall in one of the Best of British parks. Many of the scenes from the show are filmed in Charlestown, a fishing village near St Austell, where children can discover tall ships and learn about the shipwrecks, which line the coast. Other locations that feature heavily are the beaches of Kynance Cove, Porthcurno as well as historic mining locations such as Levant mine, which is presently managed by the National Trust.

Tomb Raider The Cradle of Life was shot in Snowdonia National Park after the films producers failed to secure permission to film in China, where the film was set. During the two-week shoot producers constructed a traditional Chinese village with a water mill to create an authentic backdrop in the valleys of Wales. Whilst this has since been deconstructed, it is possible to walk around the shores of Lake Llyn Gwynant and marvel the magnificent scenery, which was show cased in the box office hit.
