Holiday In Cheshire This Summer!
Cheshire is a county brimming with both excitement and opportunities to relax and unwind. Situated in the north west of England, it is well known for its idyllic villages of half timber and local sandstone, for its industrial revolution heritage and links with big cities such as Chester, Manchester and Liverpool. You’ll not be far from some stunning beaches on the north west coast. A dog walker’s paradise, photographer’s dream and foodie’s heaven, there is much to see and do here. We’d like to introduce you to Cheshire and suggest you consider visiting this summer!
North West Coastline
Cheshire has a short section of coastline around the Wirral peninsula, which is considerable from an ecological point of view. The Dee and Mersey estuaries are important wildlife habitats, recognised internationally for their wildlife. The change in tides creates an assortment of habitats in estuaries. The sand and mudflats, dunes, marshes, beaches and saline lagoons which fringe our shores are the biological engines which fuel the biodiversity of the natural world.
Equally important, coastal habitats such as beaches form the foundation of major recreational and tourist economies, and can also play a crucial role in coastal defence, reducing the risk of flooding and damage to both people and terrestrial habitats. The Dee estuaries are also important migratory routes for Atlantic salmon, swimming from the sea through the estuary to the freshwater rivers to spawn, and later in life for migration from nursery site to feeding grounds in the Atlantic Sea
Rural Adventures
The Cheshire countryside is something to behold, it is stunning when seen from viewing points and idyllic when passed through on rural walks. From this angle, we see Shutlingsloe in the distance, viewed from the rocks on Shining Tor. The Cat and Fiddle Road snakes through the middle of the image, a road that can take you as far as the Peak District winding and bending through landscapes like this. Whether you are walking, or driving through the landscape, you will notice the vast swathes of land, the green hue and the changing colours as we head toward autumn. This is a magical, unspoiled and mythical landscape.
National Waterways Museum – Ellesmere Port
Looking back on this part of the country’s importance in our industrial revolution, unlock the wonders of the waterways at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port. With its idyllic waterside setting, historic canal boats and fascinating displays housed in Victorian buildings of the former transhipment dock, the museum is a great day out whatever the weather. Friendly dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on a lead at all times.
City Exploring
We start in Chester, a city that is home to the UK’s most popular zoo, the oldest racecourse, and largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain, plus a 1000 year old cathedral and 700 year old unique shopping rows. Explore the city aboard an open top bus, take a guided walking tour of the city or enjoy a leisurely sail up the river on one of Chester’s pleasure cruises. The black and white buildings are an architectural delight and dot the city’s landscape. It’s well worth a day trip into the city, a stop for lunch and a tour to see all this historic city has to offer.
Wildlife Haven
The county, with so much green space, is a wildlife haven. There are multiple nature reserves to explore in the area, from heath land to water scapes, hilly adventures to forest walks. This deer was photographed in Knutsford.
During the summer, meadows and farmland are popular places to hear the song of skylarks high above you. These are the best months to see insects, butterflies, moths, and dragonflies. There is also an abundance of wildflowers to look out for on road verges, meadows and coastline and the heathland turns purple with heather flowering in August. If you are out and about in the evening you may also catch a glimpse of bats flying.
If we look a little further ahead to autumn, you can enjoy the changing leaf colours from green to vibrant yellows, oranges and reds. The woodlands are also home to a selection of multi-coloured and variety of shaped fungi. Trees and shrubs will now bear berries – the perfect time for making blackberry jam.
