The Padstow May Day celebrations take place on the 1st May, the biggest day in Padstow's calendar. It's not unusual for 30,000 people to flock into this little town on the day when Padstonians from all over the world return to their roots. The origins of the Obby Oss are numerous. Some say the celebration has its roots in pagan times, others that it's a rain maker, a fertility symbol, a deterrent to a possible landing by the French some centuries ago or perhaps a welcome to the summer.

The St Agnes Bolster also take place on Sunday the 1st May with a  celebration of Cornish music and art featuring life size puppets, a drum band and a 28ft giant effigy re-enacting the famous Cornish legend of the giant called Bolster. A great day out for all the family. This spring festival incorporates one of the county’s oldest legends with plenty to entertain old and young alike. Follow the lantern procession up to the beacon and gather around the bonfire where clay houses are fired and then used the following day to symbolise the village of St Agnes.
