Hendra Holiday Park has received a prestigious national award from the Royal Horticultural Society, the UK's leading gardening organisation, as part of the Britain in Bloom annual awards.
Hendra Holiday Park Manager, Matt Way, said: “Winning the RHS Britain in Bloom Commercial Award is a fantastic accolade. You have to be nominated for this national award; it is not something you can enter, which makes being nominated alone very special. We are committed to protecting our environment which means making our operation greener as well as having award winning grounds, so it is great to be recognised for this by the UK’s leading gardening organisation.”
Chair of the RHS Britain in Bloom UK Judging Panel, Roger Burnett, led a team of 14 volunteer judges who toured the UK in July and August visiting each Britain in Bloom finalist, including Newquay, the South West’s regional finalist. They marked against three key criteria - horticultural achievement, community participation and environmental responsibility. It was whilst they were at Hendra, which forms part of the tour for Newquay in Bloom, that they decided to nominate the park for the Commercial Award, as it demonstrated the best environmental contribution from business and corporate interests.
The Press Office for the RHS said: “Hendra Holiday Park has a strong environmental commitment to reduce energy and recycling and attained the David Bellamy Gold Award and Visit Cornwall Sustainable Tourism Award. The Park has just invested £3 million in a 10 acre solar farm to power 70% of the electric requirements including the indoor swimming pool. The park is on the National cycle route and provides nature trails for families to enjoy. As well as the environmental side Hendra has landscaped grounds with its own nursery and produces 20,000 seasonal plants.”
Hendra’s grounds and facilities have also been recognised by Newquay in Bloom, where Hendra won the first prize for the Shops Category, third prize in Leisure and Tourist Parks Category, and highly commended for the hanging baskets.
