We're enjoying introducing you to the owners of the Best of British holiday parks, because the faces behind the scenes are more important now than ever before. Our family owned holiday parks are looking forward to welcoming guests for a 2021 staycation!
Trethem Mill Touring Park is one of few adult only holiday parks in Cornwall. It is based on the Roseland Peninsula and surrounding by beautiful Cornish countryside. The caravan park was originally established in the 1960s and been run by the same family since 1992. Over the years the basic fields have been transformed into a multi award-winning holiday park.
Q: Tell us about Trethem Mill...
A: The Park is on the Roseland Peninsula, which is situated on the South coast of Cornwall, just across the bay from the port of Falmouth. The Peninsula has been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty for the quality of its landscape and coastal scenery. We can be found inland, about a mile from the sea, and about 3 miles from the quaint fishing villages of St Mawes and Portscatho. The Park itself is nestled in a valley, surrounded by farmland and offers a peaceful and rural retreat.
The Peninsula itself is very quiet and un-commercialised but within an hours travel you can reach all the major attractions such as the Eden Project, Lost gardens of Heligan and the National Maritime Museum as well as the rest of the County. Locally we have several beautiful and secluded beaches to enjoy, lots of coastal and country walks or you can enjoy being on the water with one of the numerous ferry and boat trips available.
Q: Please introduce your team...
A: Trethem Mill is owned and run by three generations of our family – Ian, Jane, Derek (Ian’s dad) and our son Jake. We also employ Theo who has been with us full time for over five years and works within all areas of the business. We moved to the Park in July 1992 having spent a number of years running a business on the north coast of Cornwall. Over the years we have gradually transformed the Park from an open field with basic facilities into the high quality, multi award winning Park that it is today. This has taken a considerable amount of hard work and investment and has certainly been a challenge as both industry guidelines and guest’s expectations continue to change. Electric hook-ups, TV reception and WiFi which were once luxury extras are now considered a basic requirement and we have had to adapt to keep up with the growing needs.
Q: What makes Trethem Mill a 5 star experience?
A: Our approach to developing and running the Park has always been based on would this be somewhere we would like to stay ourselves? Having had a motorhome for many years we had plenty of experience visiting other parks and discovering what we think does and doesn’t work and what is needed to make your stay as comfortable and practical as possible. All our team work long hours when we are open and between us we run the office, reception, shop, grounds work, gardening and cleaning. There is always something that needs doing and there is always someone on call! This means we provide continuity of service throughout the Park and there will always be one of us out and about. We are able to get to know our guests, especially when it comes to making bookings, such as which pitches they like or will they need a helping hand to pitch up.
We are very fortunate to have achieved a high level of repeat business year on year and it’s lovely when we see familiar faces returning as we know we must be getting something right. However, after nearly 29 years we are not getting any younger. In recent years we have become increasingly aware that we need to be making some necessary changes to the nature of the business in order for us to maintain the high quality and service we strive to offer. After much discussion we decided that as of April 2021 we will be an adults only Park for guests aged 18 and over. There are currently very few adults only parks in Cornwall and we are very excited about this change in direction.
Q: What awards have you won?
A: Over the years we are very proud to have received numerous awards at county, regional and national level. Every award is a real achievement but we were particularly honoured to be named as the Visit England best park in England in 2010 and 2017 and also the AA Southwest campsite of the year 2018/19. To achieve recognition at these highest levels gives the whole team a real boost and sense of pride in what we are doing. We have also been awarded the AA 5-pennant Platinum and Visit England Gold awards for exceptional quality and service beyond the usual 5-star rating.
Q: How have you made Trethem Mill a Covid-secure environment?
A: As with the rest of the country the business was particularly affected by Covid-19 during 2020. The uncertainty of whether we would be able to open at all put a huge strain on us and we started thinking about contingency plans if we were to lose the whole season. It was both heart-breaking and a logistical challenge having to cancel so many holidays during April, May and June. We were overwhelmed by the support we received from our guests with many rescheduling new dates either later in the year or transferring to new dates in 2021. Although we were delighted at being able to finally open at the beginning of July we were also anxious at the prospect. We were fortunate to be able to secure supplies of PPE, protective screens and specialist cleaning products to ensure that both our team and guests were kept safe.
For the safety of everyone we decided to limit the number of pitches and facilities we had open. Everyone was aware of how we would be operating and were generally respectful and considerate towards fellow guests and ourselves. After the long, terrible months in lockdown it was lovely to be able to provide some respite for those able to take a holiday.
Q: What are your hopes for the 2021 season?
A: Although we are currently in another national lockdown we very much hope that we can open the Park on the 1st April and we are currently taking advance bookings as usual. Despite our shift towards the adults only market it is already looking busy, especially during June, July and September, due somewhat to the number of bookings that we transferred from last year. We very much doubt that this year will run as normal and we fully expect to be working under a certain amount of Covid restrictions again. However, by working together we got through one of the worst years we have all had to endure so we know that we can do it. Taking a break in your own self-contained caravan or motorhome is one of the safest ways to have a holiday and we are definitely seeing an increase in the number of people opting to do this. We very much look forward to hopefully welcoming you to Trethem Mill in the future!
